Announcing Vizgen 2024 MERSCOPE® Data Image Calendar Contest Winners

Vizgen’s MERSCOPE® Platform, the industry’s first high plex, in situ single-cell spatial genomics solution, has the power to generate spatial transcriptomic images that are not only exceptional in their accuracy and detection efficiency, but also breathtaking in their beauty.

We called out to all MERSCOPE users to submit their most captivating MERSCOPE data images for the opportunity to have their research showcased in our 2024 Vizgen Calendar. We are thrilled to share with you this year’s winning images – check them out:

January- Fixed Frozen Schmidtea mediterranea

Fixed Frozen Schmidtea mediterranea

This first-of-its-kind schmidtea Mediterranean (planarian) tissue sample image was submitted by MERSCOPE customer Chanyoung Park, Graduate Research Assistant at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research.

February- Fixed Frozen Mouse Heart

In honor of Heart Month, February’s image is this incredibly vivid and detailed mouse heart, submitted by the Vizgen team.

March- FFPE Human Colorectal tumor

In support of Colorectal Cancer (CRC) Awareness month, we selected this stunning CRC tumor tissue image submitted by MERSCOPE customer Roy Granit, Head of Computational Discovery at Compugen.

April- Fresh Frozen Arabidopsis thaliana

Arabidopsis thaliana

To celebrate Earth Month in April, we selected this data image submitted by MERSCOPE customer Tatsuya Nobori, Postdoc at the Salk Institute. The MERSCOPE data image showcases the intricate tissue structure of Arabidopsis thaliana, a small plant from the mustard family, infected by bacterial pathogens.

May- FFPE Human Melanoma Tumor

In honor of Melanoma Awareness month, we chose to highlight this human Melanoma Formalin-fixed Paraffin-embedded (FFPE) sample submitted by the team at Vizgen.

June- FFPE Human Uterine Cancer Tumor

Our June feature was selected in support of Uterine Cancer Awareness month. The MERSCOPE data image was generated by Vizgen as part of our Protein Co-detection data release and captures a striking FFPE human Uterine Cancer tissue section.

July- Fresh Frozen Mouse Brain

Check out this incredible mouse brain tissue sample collage, submitted by MERSCOPE customer Kevin Johnston, Post-doctoral Scholar at UCI.

August- Fresh Frozen Arabidopsis thaliana Silique

This winning August Arabidopsis thaliana sample image was submitted by MERSCOPE customer Travis Lee, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Salk Institute, and shows the plant’s fruit development.

September- FFPE Human Ovarian Cancer Tumor

In support of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we chose to feature this human Ovarian Cancer FFPE image, courtesy of the Vizgen team.

October- FFPE Human Lung

This spooky lung tissue sample image, submitted by MERSCOPE customer Arianna Williams, Research Associate at TGEN, was selected as our October calendar feature in honor of Healthy Lung Month (and Halloween!).

November- Fixed Frozen Mouse Brain

As November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we’re highlighting this beautiful mouse brain image submitted by MERSCOPE customer Maricarmen Pachicano, Graduate Student Worker at the University of Southern California.

December- FFPE Human Kidney

To wrap up our 2024 calendar series, we’re highlighting this kidney tissue image submitted by MERSCOPE customer Christoph Kuppe, Professor at RWTH Aachen.

Thank you to those who submitted their incredible MERSCOPE data images that showcase the impactful research that is being enabled by spatial transcriptomics technology. Our MERSCOPE customers continue to inspire and innovate, building robust maps of biological systems poised to power breakthrough scientific discoveries.

Vizgen’s mission to provide researchers with the tools needed to improve human health comes to life with each of these beautiful MERSCOPE data images. Keep an eye on the Vizgen Views Blog where we’ll take a closer look at the featured images each month throughout 2024.
